2006-2007
Last year was another successful year for the
society as our membership continued to grow significantly and we
are really indebted to the folks who organised the events but
also to our members who show up and make the events such a
laugh!
Our year traditionally kicks off in
September and the AGM was one of the most successful in
recent memory where we elected the committee at the British Club
and enjoyed a great curry buffet and lively sets from Gan Ainm
over a few minerals... yeah right! We also had a bowling event
for the Kids at the American Club and this was a great day! We
also organised a table at the Oktoberfest in the Swiss Club for
our members - the names shall be with-held to protect the
innocent but let's say this well sell out quickly again in 2007!
October and November is
traditionally the time frame for our Curry Nite and Kids
Halloween Party and again we had a great showing from our
members. As ever, coffee mornings are organised monthly and this
is a perfect opportunity for new members to get acquainted with
the regular members!
December is quiz month and we held the
event in Molly Malones this year - the Irish Embassy romped home
in fine style but noble efforts were made by all the other
teams. In a very nice [but unplanned] end to the night, a lot of
our members made it to the Arcadia area to kick off a Karaoke
session which lasted into the wee hours! Some astonishing
performances, let's leave it at that!
January and February tend to be
quieter months as people recover from Christmas and the
committee launches into the Ball organisation proper. However,
the ladies had a great dinner on Little Womens Christmas while
the husbands stayed at home putting ice on the credit cards and
trying to figure out the kids toys! We also organised a night
out to cheer on the rugby boys in green as they raced to another
triple crown this year. Thank you to the English team for being
such excellent canon fodder ;)
March is one word only - BALL! Given it
was our 60th year in Singapore we went all out and without doubt
it was the most successful Irish ball ever. We had an Irish Minister
for in attendance, Mr Michael Ahern TD and also our ambassador
HE Mr. Richard O'Brien fronting up a guest list in excess of 620 people.
The society managed to raise almost $75000 for Make-A-Wish on
the night. We're immensely proud of that!!!
Thank you for your support
April, May and June saw
us organise a number of events. The kids had a wonderful day
doing an Egg Treasure Hunt for Easter in April. In May we had
our annual car treasure hunt which was really well attended. You
think you know Singapore well!? Not a hope, come to next years
Treasure Hunt and we'll see! In June we had our best kept secret
- the Cultural Night! Yet again, this now annual event was
hugely successful with our members all getting a chance to
recite poems, prose, humour, sing, play instruments and
generally have a laugh while we appreciate our culture.
So that's only the half of it! We will do our
best to make 2007-2008 at least as good so let's see you at the
events this year - ar aghaidh libh!!!
